Description
A delicious layered dessert featuring whipped cream, custard, and mixed berries.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 pound sponge cake, cut into cubes
- 2 cups custard (homemade or store-bought)
- 1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted
- 2 tablespoons berry liqueur (optional)
- 1/4 cup berry jam
Instructions
- Prepare the Berries: Wash and dry the berries. If using strawberries, hull and slice them. In a bowl, mix the berries with the berry liqueur (if using) and let them macerate for 15 minutes.
- Prepare the Whipped Cream: In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream with sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Set aside.
- Layer the Trifle:
- First Layer: Place half of the sponge cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle dish.
- Second Layer: Spread a layer of berry jam over the sponge cake.
- Third Layer: Add half of the macerated berries over the jam layer.
- Fourth Layer: Pour half of the custard over the berries.
- Repeat the layering process with the remaining cake, jam, berries, and custard.
- Top with Whipped Cream: Spread the whipped cream over the top of the trifle layers.
- Garnish: Sprinkle toasted almonds on top for added texture and flavor.
Notes
- Custard Tip: If making homemade custard, ensure it’s cooled before layering.
- Berry Tip: Frozen berries can be used if fresh are unavailable. Thaw them and mix with a bit more sugar as they may be tarter.
- Cake Tip: A store-bought pound cake or ladyfingers can be used instead of sponge cake.
- Serving Tip: Prepare the trifle a day in advance to allow flavors to blend. Add whipped cream and almonds just before serving.
- For a lighter version, substitute Greek yogurt for whipped cream.
