Description
Delicious red velvet cinnamon rolls topped with creamy cream cheese frosting.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup whole milk, warmed
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon red food coloring
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and let it stand for about 5 minutes until frothy. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Add eggs, sugar, melted butter, red food coloring, and yeast mixture to the flour mixture. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll out the dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Spread softened butter over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border on the sides. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
- Assemble the Rolls: Tightly roll up the dough, starting from a long side, into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal slices and place them in a greased baking dish. Cover and let the rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Baking: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for about 20-25 minutes, until lightly golden and baked through.
- Make the Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until smooth.
- Finishing Touches: Allow the rolls to cool slightly before spreading the cream cheese frosting over them.
Notes
- For an extra gooey filling, add a bit more butter and sugar.
- Ensure your milk is only warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
- Adjust the amount of cocoa and food coloring to achieve your preferred red velvet color.
- Serve warm for the best texture and flavor experience.
